Opal was first discovered in Ethiopia mid of 1990s specimens from Mezezo shewa province around 180 km from Addis Ababa consist of nodules of a reddish brown volcanic rock orange, reddish brown, or they call it “chocolate”.

The next Major discovery occurred in 2008 welo opal from Wegel Tena , small village in Tsehay Mewcha welo province from North part of Ethiopia.
In 2013, yet another source was discovered in welo, at the stayish mine near the town of Gashena.

This discovery has yielded mostly black opal, along with some white opal. It is set in distinct opal-bearing layer in a mountainous area at an altitude of around from 2,900-3,150 meters. Northeast part and approximately 684 KM from Addis Ababa.

Most of our collections opals came from those areas !
